Linene Winter Gamefish Blitz
Linene Winter Gamefish Blitz: As we do every year in May last week we once again went to fish with Warren, Chris and Andrew with Justino and Charlie on the deck aboard Strenue at Linene. At what must be my favorite place to fish from on this whole archipelago.
Baits in
First and foremost are the 8-minute runs to the fishing grounds… that´s right up there how amazing is it to easily be fishing before sunrise, until after sunset and go home for lunch if you want in the middle of the day – not that we ever do it ????
I mean it was day three that we started late and got on the boat at 07h11 and by 07h24 we had two Marlin live baits out!!! It does not hurt to have all those reefs which consistently provide good baits right in front of the house as well!
Remote Location
Then it’s the remoteness of the lodge and we hardly saw any other boats during the 5 days we were there and definitely not fishing as early or as late as we did.
Accommodation is great, drinks are cold and the staff amazing and of course I have to mention Chef Torres and his sidekick Armindo who provide the most delicious pre dinner fresh sashimi, poki and fish carpaccio every day and absolutely delicious dinners and boat food.
The fishing
The previous week we had a decent Blue Marlin bite which is normal for this time of year as well as Blacks inshore, which although normally smaller than the fish we see during the peak in Sep-Dec are in good numbers and a few years ago fishing with the same crew we had lost a good 900+ fish right in the middle of May.
But unfortunately, and despite it being so rare this time of year (along with wind) we found some horrible looking water which as anyone knows is not very conducive to Marlin fishing.
But being hard core on that front we still gave it a good try and on two of the days went out wide for a few hours. The first day we only found better looking water out wide in 380m meters and the second in 240! We never saw a Blue but did catch some dorado out there, the best a beautiful 18.5 kg.
Andrew with a smashing dorado and Warren with one of many good cuta caught on live jube jubes – Linene Bliss and amazing fishing!
We also pulled a few lures, live and dead baits for Black´s and did raise one small fish on the skip bait that did not commit and then on the last morning (we only fished until 9am) we had one take the live bonnie but come undone after the first run, obviously just holding on to the bait and the circle never found the spot!
We had a number of baits taxed, a few on wahoo and other´s on sharks!
Having had such a good sailfish bite recently even knowing that the green water was not great after having a few knocks down’s either on the Marlin lures or while bait fishing, we decided to fish for them for a half day – we went 3 from 6 with a few misses on the longs with J´s but getting it done on the pitched fish that come on the short teasers.
Sailfish abound this time of year at the Bazaruto Archipelago and despite the green water and our Marlin obsession, in the few hours we targeted them we got them good…
Now the game fishing was incredible and if we had wanted it could have been an absolute slaughter… very few times have I seen such quantity of bait around, it was mayhem and kawakawa, skipjack and jube jube´s where everywhere and feeding (and being fed on) together in a huge scale.
Besides bait fishing which was easy to say the least we only spent a couple hours doing light tackle game fishing either on the feathers and rappies but mostly using live jube jube´s and it was mayhem.
Cuta (King mackerel) where wild and every live jube jube we put in the water was eaten very quickly with some nice size cuta but also had other game fish and got reefed by a nice GT!
All in all, amazing fishing in a magical place with great people.
What else could one ask for ????
Happy days…
Now it’s off to Bazaruto for some more fishing….
