First Sailfish for Samantha Simser
First Sailfish for Samantha Simser: It’s been a roller-coaster of a month fishing from Inhassoro, then Linene, then Vilankulos and the last two weeks from Bazaruto. I was done there on the 29th and supposed to come home but Aaron Simser called me up and asked me to do an overnight with him and show him the San Sebastian Peninsula down south and to try and catch his wife her first saltwater fish, ideally a Sailfish.
The previous day had been great with some big cuta around, some wahoo, dorado, YFT, skipjack and a few sailies released including three on a half day.
Despite unseasonal green water the Sailfish bite has been steady and on this specific half day Alex took out it was wild with 3 from 8 in the space of an hour and a half and some nice YFT including this 21 kilo…
First Sailfish for Samantha
They picked me up at Anantara at about 7am and off we went to try and catch the first Sailfish for Samantha Simser.
Well, we set up a spread of a lures with bait on the longs and shotgun, then two teasers of the bridge to pitch for them and a couple rappies and feather short to pick up bait and something for dinner. We worked south in the shallow water inside Benguerra and when we got to 20 meters I said to Erin, we finally fishing – well the words had barely left my mouth when a Sailfish appeared on the left teaser.
That was easy!!! ????
Then another two come up and we hooked two.
Unfortunately, well into it, Aaron´s fell off but Samantha´s was properly hooked and we got it boat side for some pics and let it go.
Let me say it again – that was easy – seconds of fishing and the fish showed up.
We should have worked the area harder but we had a long way to go and did not want to go over the Canyon area well into the outgoing tide so we straight lined it south.
We got a few bonnies on the way there and finally got to the Linene area midafternoon.
Loads of bait around there, mostly jube jubes but a few yellowfin as well – looked real good and at last light we hooked up again on a Sailfish.
This time it was Aaron on the rod and so cool to finish the day with husband and wife both releasing a sailfish!
Went inside the sandspit and anchored in that stunning setting and had a beautiful one… I mean a lovely setting, crazy stars, grilled some meat in great company, had a few cold ones and then a stunning red half-moon rise!
What else does one need!!!
Brilliant!
…and well done on your first Sailfish Samantha!
Beach GT
Our friend Eugene was camping on the spit just south of us and he got this nice GT from the beach on the spinning gear!
The next day we decided to head back and straight lined north and got a really nice 26 kg, Aaron´s biggest to date and as we started to head in at II mile we saw a free jumper so worked the area for a while and missed / dropped 3 sailies – the bloody things kept going for the rappies!
Not only did we get the first Sailfish for Samantha Simser we also got Aaron his biggest cuta to date…
