2 Black Marlin and record wahoo for Johnny and Michael Velloza
2 Black Marlin and record wahoo for Johnny and Michael Velloza : The Velloza family arrived for their annual September Marlin fishing trip a week ago and we did 4 fishing days with Johnny and Michael, who are always a pleasure to fish with as well as spending time with his wife Joanne and daughter Ashley.
The first day dawned with the beast from the east blowing which was the forecast for the next few days which we knew would not help with the fishing and might help explain the absolute lack of surface activity.
The guys like to do some jigging sessions in between as well as bait fishing which I was for once very happy to comply with, seeing due to having just returned from the Azores we are not well stocked on bait just yet!
A lot of queens at IV Mile in the morning but all small and loads of scads of which we caught a few but could have stayed there and caught a bunch!
But I was really eager to put the lures in for the tide change and just in good time as right on it we hooked up on the short left and Johnny brought in the small Black for a release.
Michael was obviously jubilant to be back in the chair mid-way through the first morning and also not have to wait long!
Roughly an hour and a half after releasing the first fish and not 50 meters from where we had that first bite, BUM we get a nice bite on the long right little green devil (also known as the Marlin Magnet by Pulsator) and hookup on a better fish which we also released.
2 for 2 before midday on the first day – not a bad start for sure…

Two Black Marlin and record wahoo for Johnny and Michael Velloza one of which caught on the infamous little green devil also known elsewhere as the Marlin magnet by Pulsator Lures

Unfortunately, we did not see another fish and generally speaking it was pretty slow all round except on a few jigging sessions where we caught a few fish but between cuta cut off´s, being reefed and getting taxed we were totally smoked. Even afternoon spent at kings on the last two days with a perfect tide to try and get as many quennies as possible where slow – although we did catch some jobfish and kingies on the jig there. And, we saw some insane GT action with some truly big fish and without a single popping rod on the boat!
Ohhh and the previous day we had a truly Giant great Barracuda, probably well over 30 kilos taking the short corner riggler in 70 meters of water. We lost it right by the boat but were obviously going to release it either way.
But the best come on the last day, we had gone out wide, it was flat calm, almost to perfect (if it was not for the breeze from the east) and we had just gotten to the shallower marks on the Blue Spot out of Sailfish when the long-left Xpress got taken and Alex shouted Wahoooooooo….

I did not see the bite and it never jumped but the way it was running I thought Alex was seeing things!
Knowing it was not a Marlin, Johnny was kind enough to tell Michael to get in the chair and he did not have to be asked twice (What we do for our children 😊)!
Even on the Heavy tackle this thing´s power was unbelievable and Michael finally brought it for Alex to wire it and Lourenço to gaff it and both of them hauled it on board.

Absolute monster, at 38 kilos the second biggest we have ever caught here and by far the deepest we have ever hooked one.
What a fish to get on the last day so as to make sure we had a memorable last night’s dinner with a sushi, sashimi and carpaccio feast, followed by some grilled wahoo medallions with veggies and chips and gently washed down by some amazing sauvignon blanc…
Life´s good 😊
Now we are going back home for a few days, doing a 2-day private charter on Drop Your Rods at the end of September, then going to San Sebastian to run a private boat early October. Over that time Christiaan will be fishing with our clients on DYR and I will then be back on the Island to get all ready to start fishing back-to-back from the 9th October…
Cheers
