Main word: The one that got away…

The one that got away…

It’s not all about the fish we get but good fish and when there is one as big as this it’s always nice to share as that is one impressive fish…

As is known except for two fish, one caught in 1969 just south of Bazaruto in Tofo and the other more recently in Madagascar, all other grander Black Marlin have been caught in our home waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago – so its big news when a fish this size is caught or seen anywhere outside of it – on the East coast of Africa.

As far as we know there are only four black marlin over 900 lb that have been landed in South African waters of which three were caught off Sodwana Bay where Bakgat lost this fish last week.

You can see a bit of the history of grander catches in Africa and the area below

Anyway, last week Charl Senekal sent me these pics about a big fish that was lost at Sodwana and asked me what my opinion was on its weight!

Well that certainly got my attention

I was obviously very interested to know the story behind this big Black and he sent me Koos van Schalkwyk contact who had been in the chair for this fish.

I got in touch with him today to congratulate him and get more info on the fish…

They fought it for 2h30 before they lost last Tuesday aboard Tiaan van Vuuren veseel – Bakgat in Sodwana.

They hooked this fish on a big live Kawakawa in 58 meters of water and amazingly as they later found out the fish was never hooked, as the circle had gone into the bait on the bite.

The one that got away…

Both pictures above clearly show the bait quite far from the mouth showing that the fish was wrapped around the leader and as the crew later found out the circle hook was stuck inside the bait.

The fish was obviously just wrapped around and one can see that bait in the back in a few of the pics – what is really astonishing is that apparently the fish came off three or four times during the fight and each time it ate the bait again and again it got wrapped…

Well done guys, what a fish, you had the experience and she is still swimming out there…

Not great quality pictures as they are taken from the video which you can see here…

Merry Merry Christmas to all and our best wishes for 2025!!!
