500 Pound Horta Azores Blue Marlin: news fresh in from the FishBazaruto.com team…

“Duarte is presently fishing out of Horta in the Azores with some of his top clients.

When the area had that never seen before big Blue Marlin bite two seasons ago phone calls kept coming in to organize a trip. Having fished a full season decking on the Xacara there 19 years ago it was certainly time to go back.

Despite the fishing having been slow this season the boys are catching a few nice ones and I am sure we will have a full report once Duarte is back, but in the meantime, here is a small clip from a 500-pound fish caught on the pitch by Warren Chapman aboard the Brasilia a couple of days ago….

Duarte is back to his home waters of Bazaruto in the next couple of weeks to start the heavy tackle Giant Black Marlin season and he just had a cancelation aboard the 38ft Drop Your Rods with Capt. Christiaan Kruger from the 14 to 17 November 2025 so anyone interested get in contact…

Tight lines”

Thank you for the update and looking forward to the marlin fleet reports about to start as the big momma season fires up!

Horta, nestled on Faial Island in the heart of the Azores, is a legendary launchpad for big-game anglers chasing the elusive blue marlin. With deep Atlantic waters just minutes from shore, this volcanic archipelago offers one of the most accessible and productive marlin fisheries in the world.

The prime season runs from June through September, when warm currents sweep in and bring these ocean giants tantalizingly close to the islands. Boats depart from the iconic Horta Marina, a bustling port known for its colorful murals and rich maritime history. Within minutes, anglers are trolling over drop-offs that plunge thousands of meters — prime territory for marlin that can exceed 1,000 pounds.

Fishing here is typically done with large artificial lures or rigged baits, and the strike of a blue marlin is nothing short of explosive. Captains in Horta are seasoned pros, many with decades of experience and a deep respect for the fishery. Catch-and-release is widely practiced to preserve stocks and ensure future generations can experience the same thrill.

Beyond the fishing, Horta offers a laid-back charm. Peter Café Sport, a legendary sailor’s haunt, is the unofficial clubhouse for anglers swapping stories over a cold beer. The surrounding landscape — dramatic cliffs, lush greenery, and views of neighboring Pico Island — adds to the magic.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a first-timer, blue marlin fishing out of Horta promises adrenaline, beauty, and a shot at one of the ocean’s most prized catches.
