Teach a kid to fish…: Fishing with kids @fishbazaruto has been something really special and which we absolutely love.

Over the years we have had the absolute pleasure of fishing with many legendary kids some of which fished from when they were 4 years old until teenagers and even adulthood – yeah that is how old we are and how long we have been here.

We could have dozens and dozens more photos and we apologize to many great kids that fished with us over the years, those were just a few that pitched up…

On his second trip to fish with us Chris Koatze had an amazing time and many memories to cherish forever but I am sure that none were as special as seeing his 11 year old son, Christoff catch his first Marlin – and a good one at that!

He had come along with some mates and after a short bait session we put the dead baits out and hooked up straight away releasing 2 fish before 9am. We ended the day going 3 from 4 and all adults releasing one.

So, when they got on the boat the next day young Christoff asked if he could be in the chair. His Dad and everyone else were skeptical but I was all for it and spent a lot of time setting the boy up and teaching how to work the chair and tackle.

The bite was not as hot but we missed a small one in the morning and at midday a mid-ranger took the swim bait and hookup.

The young lad did a great job, completely unassisted and in 20 minutes we released a very healthy 500-pound Black!

Many years ago, Ulrich Schnetler came to fish with us and hooked up to his first ever Marlin 15 minutes into the first day, a nice 400-pound Black Marlin. Him and Francis enjoyed a superb week of Marlin fishing over that week and we fished for many more years catching a bunch of real nice ones together.

Then in 2021 I lost contact and would not get any reply´s on his emails. Two years later I got an email from Sabrina, his wife letting me know that he had passed away with Covid and because they were immigrating, she would like to bring their 11-year-old son Anrich to come fish Bazaruto as his dad was always speaking about it.

To this day Anrich is one of the most enthusiastic kid I have seen fishing – we spent an amazing week together catching over 20 species on spinning, conventional and fly. A week I will (and I am sure Anrich) will never forget. He experienced everything from releasing numerous sailfish including a triple when he was the only angler on board, some big king mackerel and wahoo, all the trevally species on popper, spinning and fly, big barracuda on popper and numerous other species.

Richard Brake and Mellissa did two annual trips to Bazaruto with their four boys for many years. These were fishing trips and although all the boys were fishing extensively and all caught many good fish including nice size Marlin none was more enthusiastic than Billy.

I could literally write a book on Billy Brake. He started fishing with us when he was about 4 and caught and released countless species of fish with us including some Marlin, the first when he was 11!

I started fishing with Luis Nunes on his boat JODI when I was still a teenager and we have shared many days at sea since. Years later when I first moved to Bazaruto Didi used to come and fish with his daughter Xanoca and very young son Freddy and one special trip was absolutely memorable for the sheer numbers of sailfish.

It’s been a pleasure to have seen Freddie grow into an excellent young man and spend so many days with him at sea when he was a kid catching his first sailfish and later on his first Marlin!

We just finished a family road trip to South Africa and our first stop was as usual Tofo where we enjoyed some great meals with good friends including Nobina and Craig (who own the famous Sumi restaurant) and enjoyed some delicious treats at their house.

The next day they were going fishing @ Barra and Nobina sent me some videos and this awesome pic of a 25 kg GT that their 9-year-old son had caught. Ok not with us but I was so proud of the boy I just had to put it here…

Legend Kaito!!!

Just before the trip I had done some days with Brendan Fisher aboard the 38ft Rocksteady. On the first day his young kids joined us and here is great elation on their faces with a Dorado they caught together!!!

Many moons ago we had Steve Worswick and his son´s join us aboard VAMIZI on what was an epic day on the fly with the boys getting seriously stretched…

Last but not least, Duarte had a good Marlin bait spinning fishing session a couple weeks ago (just need another 50 quennies before starting the season 😉) and with a juvenile Black caught around this time last year. Fishing with kids is very special and with your own kid is at a different level.
