Early Winter Bite at Bazaruto
Early Winter Bite at Bazaruto: Last week we had Bruce & Katherine Winston from the US along with Courtenay and Tiffany, who by the end of the week was the “wahoo Queen“!
It was their fourth trip with us at Bazaruto and as usual we had an awesome time, such a great party who just enjoy being out there and take the fishing as it comes.
They have always come around this time of year and we have had some pretty good charters over the years. The last one in 2023 was amazing where we caught a bunch of good fish including loads of wahoo, sailfish and some BIG king mackerel with Katherine catching a truly big crocodile!
Here’s the report on that one;

Bruce & Katherine Winston enjoying the breeze and calm seas on the bow of the 38ft SuperCat – Drop Your Rods!
This time around the fishing we had another crocodile cuta looking in the 30kilo range, also on a live jube jube but unfortunately, we lost this one right by the boat.
The previous week we had an absolute blast catching over 150 game fish of 24 species in four fishing days. This time and after another unseasonal cold front the fishing was not as wild, it was pretty good at times but very inconsistent and we had loads of problems with tax man.
But we did have a great time in absolutely gorgeous weather and caught some good quality fish for a great few days, and of course some delicious on board barbecue lunches of meat, fresh fish, seafood and Mozambican peri peri chicken!

Lunch time is always a blast aboard DYR – we always bring some seafood, meat, chicken for the barbecue and then choose from the fresh fish caught that morning to grill and sashimi! Of course, always accompanied by some a cold one 😉
After a wild early morning session on the second day where multiple and tripe hookup´s where the norm on kawa kawa and wahoo´s Courtenay hooked up to this sailfish which he released!
Tiffany, better known as the Queen of Wahoo, with yet another of many wahoo caught during the trip. Not to be outdone hubby Courtenay with a nice yet another. They were wild at times and we had multiple strikes and on the third day proper chaos as we had a quintuple strike and hooked four fish simultaneously!
After a slow start on the third day (where we had the wild action the previous day) we moved south and finally found the fish. It was a proper run with multiple species including wahoo, dorado and kawa kawa. In the mayhem we raised a Black Marlin on the shotgun lure which, albeit coming in twice, never hooked up – it was a pity as the 300-pound fish would have been a great challenge on the light wahoo tackle.
Seeing this, Courtenay asked if we could bring the heavy gear the next day and put them out for a few hours. So, we did on our last day, pulled the lures on the heavy gear for a few hours and caught a nice YFT and then had a real nice Black take the short corner lure. Unfortunately seconds after Courtenay got in the chair, with the fish peeling 200 yards of line in a flash, the hook came undone!

Thank you for the absolutely stunning days, always a big pleasure fishing with you all and what a great dinner we had on the last night with the family @ casa Mika!
Already looking forward to next year…
