Catching largemouth bass, carp and barbel in Portugal

Catching largemouth bass, carp and barbel in Portugal : We are, at the moment, fishing for Blue Marlin out of Horta in the Azores but before we got here spent a few days in Portugal with the boys. First in Lisbon, then Sines and then the interior of the Alentejo where we did a few sessions targeting freshwater species we had never caught before.

First on our list was to catch some largemouth bass which we did on the fourth cast on the first session. Over the next few days, we did a couple more sessions and caught 16 in total and in the middle of the action Duarte caught a barbel on a lure, something of an oddity, or so we were told.

Largemouth bass locally known as Achigas – these where the biggest we caught on about 16 different released on some sessions using some crankbaits and ultra light tackle

On the second last day he asked me to get some corn so he could try for some carp as he had seen them and sure enough the next day he went with his cousin and grandpa and everyone got into some fish, including a handful of carp and some more bass.

While we were in the Azores the boys stayed back in mainland Portugal, first on a Surf Camp down in Sines and now with my sister in Lisbon.

Another couple of weeks and we are back to Bazaruto to start the Heavy Tackle Season and very good early signs as boats are already seeing and catching a few Black and Blue Marlin.

Can´t wait for another epic season on the Bazaruto Archipelago – our 25th!!!
