Marlin and Sailfish by Angus Selby: Every May or June Angus Selby makes the long journey from the UK for a family vacation and for a couple fishing days with us.

We normally mix it up with some fly fishing and billfishing and usually do well on both ????… not only is Angus a great guy but a very good and chilled fisherman who just loves being out there…and when you do that the fishing Gods smile at you!

Last year we got some good fish on the fly and a rare spearfish…

This year we really needed the Gods to smile at us – the fishing has been good but could be much better only if the water was not as shitty green as it is at the moment, so unusual for the time of year and as we all know not very conductive for any kind of billfishing…

Anyway, on Thursday we only went out for a short session in the afternoon.

Run to 5 mile, set up the light tackle pitch baits on spinning gear and sailfish teasers and in 20 minutes outside 6 mile we raised one on the left teaser that switched beautifully and Angus released that one.

We finished the day fly fishing on the reef dredging with 500grs fly line and heavy clauser but also spinning but it was slow and we only got a cuta, a nice rainbow runner and lost a trevally of sorts.

The next day we started early and ran to the lighthouse at sunrise.

The first couple hours were absolute mayhem on the tuna, I mean we had Yellowfin busting all around us and it was insane with a lot of skipjack and bonnies in the mix.

Absolute tuna chaos!

So much so that we were so busy that we never even took one picture.

We eventually took the feathers out so we only got YFT – at 9am they sounded, we got a last skipjack and baited that one for an hour with no luck.

We then put the sailfish teasers out for the next 5 hours and raised 5 sailfish, all on the teasers and all extremely lazy. I mean crazy lazy, they would not switch or hold on, some faded to the long rigger baits, but not even bill them.

Out of the 5 we managed one bite on the pitch, hooked up but very mysteriously (don’t remember ever happening) the 100-pound leader chaffed. Looking at it I think the leader coiled around the body and snapped when the fish flexed its body on a jump!

Anyway – next!!!

But hold on – that was not it for the day.

We had the sailfish spread out but, on the shotgun, our trusted wahoo weapon, that catch’s a shit lot of obviously wahoo, but also small Blacks, sailfish and basically anything that as a look at it ????

Just outside 5 Mile off it went and we hooked up to a small Black about 150 lbs that put on a nice show before we released it…

We have now released Black & Blue Marlin, a spearfish and sailfish with Angus – guess next year we will have to go for that striped Marlin ????

Happy days and already looking forward to next year Angus – happy days!
