Persistence Pays: Chris Murphy’s 43-Year Marlin Dream Realized: Last October Chris Murphy booked me for a couple days in late May but had not told me the story of his dream that started during his honeymoon 43 years ago.
He showed up here from OZ along with his son in law @ben.hanlon for two fishing days and when we met up the previous day he told me how it has been a dream of his for the last 43 years to catch a Marlin since he first started that quest in Kenya during his honeymoon. He had done a few other trips including Mauritius and some other destinations but had failed to catch one.
The first day, Sunday we had an absolute beauty of a day but although we did have two Blue Marlin up they were really lazy bites from Blues that only pulled about 50 yards and never connected. But we did catch a dozen skipjack and YFT and as usual enjoyed a great on board barbecue lunch.

With a stiff Southerly yesterday we changed tactics and went north and after live baiting for a couple hours in the morning put the lures and went wide again. First tack in the area and we had a fish crash bite the short left. Chris got in the chair to deal with this very frisky and strong fish for the release. It was not a big fish by any means but it did have some proper attitude and was perfect for a 43 year dream!

It went quiet during noon although we did get into some nice Yellowfin tuna catching a bunch out of some double bites, they were there for the take but we left them to concentrate on a fish for Ben.
Last tack in and it showed up, again on the same lure and we hooked up to a nice one that went absolutely ballistic on the bite, going over both right lines, then proceeding to dump us into the backing before we could turn and chase. Cleared up, all under control and we ran alongside the side picking line when it doubled back on itself and into the line just above the leader…. well you can’t win them all!
If the Magnet was the flavour last week, this time it’s the Stubby Tube from @pulsatorlures that has been getting all the attention. Unfortunately we lost our only one with yesterday;s last fish but I am sure we will get reinforcements pretty soon!
Pretty decent Blue Marlin bite and although only a few hours out some days the last 4 we have released 4 from 8 bites!!!
Not too bad!!!
