African Pompano and other special species in Bazaruto

African Pompano and other special species in Bazaruto: It’s amazing how versatile the fishing can be at Bazaruto and how round about the same time of year one can have such different conditions and different fish running and how one just has to adapt to what’s cooking out there.

Chris, Geoff, Justin, Brandon and Paul have now been fishing with us in early winter for three years in a row and it’s absolutely amazing to see how different each and every single one of those trips has been.

Last year we had an absolute blast on surface action and light jigging and ended up with over 150 game fish of 24 species in 4 fishing days. Those included about 40 GT’s released with many doubles in the mix. Here’s the report from last year…

The year before that it was absolute chaos with the king mackerel. The Jube Jube’s were everywhere and we mostly live baited and besides lots and some some crocodile cuta we caught a variety of species on those juicy baits.

Here’s their 2024 report:

This year we have had some strange conditions with very warm water ‘till very late and as such its been slower than normal, the winter fish like your wahoo, sailfish, big cuta and the likes have not arrived in force and there are very few jube jube’s (the stable diet and bait this time of year) and as such we had to adapt and ended going wide for a few hours on two of the days catching some a Black Marlin for Geoff, a Blue Marlin for Brandon who also caught a Black Marlin on popper

But there were some other special fish including the main picture of another special fish for @brandon_fry7 with this beauty of an African Pompano on a popper late afternoon on Saturday. Not an everyday fish and beautiful size to it. This was after releasing a #300 pound Blue Marlin earlier in the day and a small Black marlin on popper the next day!)

@just_vanwyk with one of a few Amberjack we caught while deep jigging along with a cuta which were far and few in between for this time of year – not that we target them a lot!

While deep jigging at a 100 meters @chris_zoh caught this beauty of a yellowfin grouper / rockcod (who knows what it is as we could not find it in the books?) which we kept as she was damaged and braai on the boat and which he said was the best fish he as ever eaten! Must say it was absolutely delicious

Our friend Victor was fishing on another boat at the same time and close to us and released these two beauty’s of a GT and a magnificent Bluefin kingfish

Some more species (got 21 for the 4 days) on the ultra light jigging…
