Bazaruto March ´21 Gamefish feast

Bazaruto March ´21 Gamefish feast

Apologies for the lack of reports, March as come and gone and we had a lot of exciting and diverse fishing, first with a few marlin days, then some exciting game fish including loads of YFT and cuta (AKA King mackerel) and ended the month with a prodigious Sailfish and Wahoo bite.

Early in the month we did a few days on the 32ft magnum, Jam Packed. We based ourselves @ Inhassoro and had a great time in and out the water with some epic sessions and laugh’s with Wayne, Greg, Gary and Derek and all the crowd at Cashew bay Lodge.

On our first day we decided to go out wide and ended going 0 for 2 on Blues but did release a Black on the way in that afternoon.

It looked pretty sterile out there and with the water still at a very high 29c.

Hopes where not right up there.

Missed a couple dorado and then found a real nice current line in just over 700 meters of water. Working the flat area outside of it we had a Blue explode on the long left but no hookup. A tad later and making our way back we have another Blue come on the short corner Pulsator riggler, take a few yards of line and fade off. It come back and trailed the long right but we did not get another bite out of it.

We worked the last hour in the 55-140-meter area for Blacks and just before picking up have a small Black hookup on the long right green Marlin Magic MSR. Wayne got in the chair and made short work ok this little guy on steroids!

With the Northerly pushing green water all the way out to 400 meters the next couple days where slower with only another bite from a Black. But it was good to see the ridiculous amount of skipjack all over the place.

Bazaruto March ´21 Gamefish feast – Little Black that fell to the SC Green MM MSR for Wayne, late afternoon on the first day. Truly feisty fish and not having a proper harness aboard did not make it any easier!!! I know what I am getting the Wayne for Christmas

The rest of the month as been devoted to game fishing and coming into the end of the month conditions and general fishing has got better and better. Boys being seeing and catching some good GT´s (Giant Trevally´s). Albeit late the YFT tuna seemed to have finally arrived in serious form along with loads of skipjack everywhere which, apart from providing great sport on the light spinning sticks, is a great sign for things to come. There has also been an abundance of other species with some dorado and wahoo already showing and most of all real good run of cuta (King mackerel) which, is great to see.

Christiaan Kruger with a 111 cm GT (Giant Trevally) caught on a stick bait aboard Salt Shaker on a sinking stick bait in mid-March 2021.
Young Duarte having a gamefish feast in March ´21 on the Bazaruto Archipelago. Making the most of a vicious YFT tuna bite, he landed a number including the biggest on his spinning gear. No easy feat for the young lad….

We had a blast of a light tackle day aboard Salt Shaker.

With Eugene, Christiaan and my oldest boy Duarte we went out to have some fun and catch some fish for the table.

The day started with zillions of birds and activity on the southern side of the canyon. There where YFT and skipjack schools mixed together all over the place.

Within no time at all we caught a bunch of YFT on the troll (including the biggest for little Duarte) and another bunch of skipjack with the GT ice creams on the spinning tackle.

We the headed south and the plan was to fish for cuta on live jube jube´s. The plan did not come together as the small bonnies which were everywhere the previous days where nowhere to be found. It turned to be a problem in disguise…

With no bait we were limited to popping, jigging and spinning and at the end of the day such a better and more satisfying way to catch these speedsters.

We caught a bunch of cuta on the stickbaits and some other odds and ends including rainbow runner´s, yellow spotted trevally, pinkhandle barracuda, bonitos, bohar snapper, garfish and some other critters.

With over 24 fish of 8 species either released or for the table we made our way home in the flat calm seas for another epic Bazaruto Sunset…

The plan was to catch live jube jube´s for the plentiful and good crocodile cuta that had been showing. But, with no bait around we resorted back to the old reliable stick baits and caught and released a number along with some other species.

Christiaan hooked up to yet another nice cuta on the popping tackle….

That´s it for now @ bazaruto, we will report on trhe Sailfish and wahoo action shortly. And, starting out tomorrow again, so we shall see what it brings us!!!

All going well in these troubled times we should have spent the month chasing Blues of Santa Maria…bit it was not to be.

Here´s a special memory that popped up on our FB page, from a very special day 3 years ago when with 3 of us on the boat and only one angler we started the day with a quadruple strike and a triple hookup on Blues.

Caught two out of that and ended the day with an amazing 11 raised for 4 releases out of 8 bites on Blue Marlin up to #600….

Hopefully next year we will be back in Santa Maria aboard FourPlay for some good times…
