Hey Sean, here´s the next post….Duarte slayer of YFT on spinning plus jigging & popping galore! Cheers, Duarte

The Bazaruto jigging and popping magic dance continued this week with some absolutely epic sessions but the best was having my little guy who´s 10 now join us on the boat for a couple days slaying some YFT on the spinning tackle and getting properly stretched and badly injured after some close encounters with the kings of the reef!

Duarte slayer of YFT on spinning and jigging & popping galore!

The first day we went out and after a short trolling session while waiting for the right tide to get into one of the many reefs that are firing on the jigging at the moment.

First one to go on was my little boy and although I had given him a lighter outfit he was taken aback when that kingie start pulling him down not being used to the drag we use and have to use on these jigging spots so as to minimize getting busted on the reef, which is exactly what happen a few seconds later!

Dad, can we please lighten up the drag a little bit… no my boy we got to tighten it just a little bit more. Sorry for you!

He was not amused!!!

It really started going off and multiple and triple hookups were the norm on every drift.

Some really good yellow spotted trevally´s and we got busted by yet another GT!

Then the yellowfin tuna started busting all around us and Duarte was quick to get on the spinning rod and come tight!

It’s a little rod and gave him a good 10 minutes of proper stretching… this happens a couple of times over when they come busting on the surface!

Cool stuff in between the fast action jigging…

So, this week we had regulars Johnny and his son Michael Velloza for four days who were here last year at exactly the same time and will be back once again next year at the end of September for some more…

Last year was a cool trip and we had good fishing with the best being a 600-pound Black for Michael that gave us a great trip…

We had a live YFT on the water when we saw a hammerhead following the bait, as is procedure the boys hand line the fish all the way to the boat, as fast as possible so as to put the bait in the tubes and move a little.

The hammerhead loses interest and with the leader in hand waiting for the tubes to pump water a beautifully lit up #600 comes in charging. Fuck we let go of the bait, he crashes it swims of on the surface and gets tangled on the loop we had not yet pulled in, there she goes jumps and come off sitting the bait.

That´s when overdrive kicks in…

In record time we put out a big quennie swim bait and a bonnie skip bait and start looping the area. Sure, enough either she comes back or another very similar size fish and inhales the quennie.

As you can see from the picture on the link to last year´s Velloza report she was wild….

With really bad water this year there was no point fighting the elements and we concentrated on jigging which as per last reports has been wild!

Not much point in going over and over the sessions which, at times, were just remarkable…

Short report of the 4 days…

First day pulled lures but horrible water so not much point but we did get a lot of skipjack and YFT including a quintuple strike where we landed all of them!

Sushi and Sashimi festival!!!

It’s special to have that variety and it’s so nice to see so many YFT back here after a couple sketchy years, in three weeks we have already tripled the amount of YFT we caught last season!

This of course provides for great action ideal baits and some delicious sushi and sashimi

We did bait a few but the hammers where on the prowl and we released a scalloped!

Jigging session was OK but not wild!

The next day started jigging up north and we got into some unstoppable fish, very few doubts they were GT´s but that specific reef is so difficult when they are biting so close to the bottom.

The further south got some yellow spotted, bludgers and some good size job fish

Finished the day light tackle in the shallow getting a few nice trevally´s…

We started the next day right there and the tide was perfect and the area was firing… In an hour session we got 6 species including GT´s and a few more trevally´s, YFT, barracuda, queenfish and a big garfish!

Went out for a jigging session a bit deeper and got a few YFT on the jig then saw a #400 Black finning put a live YFT out but got bitten by a large Zambeze straight away which Johnny released after some sweat… it’s not called sharkville for nothing!

We made it a short day and went back to the lodge early…

The last day with Duarte on board we had the wild jigging session with YFT on top of the spinning which was absolutely awesome.

We also had father and son, Collin and Sean Chapman here for three days doing a few short early morning popping sessions and they got into some good GT´s, releasing a good number and losing three fish in the goose bump category…

Unfortunately, they were staying really shallow and two busted them on the reef and a third actually broke the #120 braid, either a bad spot or the drag was just a bit ambitious to try and get them into deeper water ????

Great week all round…

The whales are also in full swing and giving us some great sights on a daily basis, to say that we seeing in excess of 30 a day is no exaggeration at all…

Now hopefully we get some good water and concentrate on what we should be doing this time of year…

MARLIN FISHING….

A couple days ago Howard released his first ever Marlin fishing with Jamie Nance aboard our second boat IBO
