Second Marlin for Duarte Jnr, Insane Wahoo Bite in 22 May Report from Bazaruto

So, little Duarte who, at 11 now is not so little anymore, released his first Marlin when he was 7 years old – an insane story of a little guy catching a little fish on a little spinning rod off a local dhow…

A few weeks ago and just back from a month-long road trip we heard that the Sailfish bite had been off the charts the previous week which was early and a perfect excuse to take out Duarte to catch his first!

Duarte Jnr’s Second Marlin

We went out of Justin´s Landrey little 16ft, a small boat with a legendary history – especially of fly-fishing World Record aboard her.

I don’t think I had fished on such a small boat since my teenage years but seeing the boy caught his first Marlin of a dhow it only seemed fit for his first sailfish to be off the good ship Ahab!

So early in the morning myself, Justin, Karl (Justin´s brother) and Duarte left Vilankulos to fish the southern grounds.

As it has been and is so normal this time of the year the weather was absolutely gorgeous.

Flat, calm and sunny!

Minutes after we set up, we raised a sailfish but it had no interest and we raised a total of 4 of them for the day but only one halfhearted bite – so real lazy!

The wahoo on the other hand were in full power, no laziness there and we experienced some amazing fishing and chaos as dealing with triple and quadruple strikes from slab wahoo on light tackle on a 26ft boat is – let’s put it this way – interesting!

We literally had no more space to put fish and had an early return home but the best part of the day was when mid-morning and trolling around Marlin Pinnacle the small Black took the lightest rod in the spread!

What a great fight in flat calm seas with lots of jumps and great effort from Duarte to release this beautiful guy back into its realm.

Besides the small Black, Duarte also caught a number of wahoo including this 18 kilos specimen and Justin below with even a better specimen…
