Lula Fishing Bazaruto Style
Lula Fishing Bazaruto Style: The Bazaruto Archipelago is well known for the quantity and quality of its squid and on a daily basis one can see local dhow´s fishing for them all along the Island.
But, the shallow seagrass banks in front of the lodge are specifically known as one of the hot spots for them and debating over this during the Christmas holidays many, many moons ago, when I was still activities manager at Indigo Bay in the early 2000´s, I come up with a simple but what turned to be a brilliant idea.
Over Christmas the resort´s guests are mostly families and the swimming pool area abound with children of all sizes. We had a kids center and always came up with plans to keep those kids busy and entertained so parents could have more chilled time sipping a cold one and a cocktail by the pool bar.
So, why not put all those kids on one or more dhows and take them Lula fishing Bazaruto style!
I mean what could be a more enriching experience for the kids, we could hire dhows from the community and get them to make a buck and we could charge this per kid knowing the parents would pay for it with a smile.
This has become a very popular activity since then, kids absolutely loved it and we even got them to cook their own catch all together at Clube Naval after the fishing outing
Lulas & Chips, a winner!
I remember so many times seeing all the kids arriving at the beach for the outings all smart, nervous, excited, hat on, full of sunscreen, brand new white Billabong T-shirt and shorts. A couple hours later they would come back with the biggest smiles on their faces, all black from the squid’s ink but exhilarated by the experience and so looking forward to those lula & chips!
Well, it has now become standard and not only for the kids!
When we had a huge SE blowout on Daniel´s and Harry’s last day of their 6-day charter last week we asked them what they would like to do and they jumped at this.
My usual suggestion for a bad weather day is to go for a day´s trip to Santa Carolina (Paradise Island) which includes an awesome snorkeling experience, a lovely walk to see the ruins of the old hotel and prison and a unique barbecue on the beach (years before it become a no fishing zone it also included lots of fishing which was great and kept us stocked on swim baits 😊), but with no fishing included the boys just wanted to get on that dhow and go fishing Lula bazaruto style!
Off they went with Lourenço and had great fun, caught a bunch including some real nice ones we kept for bait and others which made a great start for our dinner!
Happy day´s…
