First Black Marlin Release for Daniel and so many more firsts…

Main word: First Black Marlin Release for Daniel and so many more firsts… The first week of the Bazaruto Season aboard VAMIZI was with Daniel Gowder from the States. And Harry Filter from SA and what two great guys to have onboard for a week of loads of fun, good humor and so many firsts for Daniel on his first trip to Mozambique…

He had caught a Blue Marlin in Japan so right up on the list was to catch him his first Black and amazingly and despite being early in the season we did it off the bat hooking a Black just after 7h30 on the first morning…

That´s one way of starting a charter and it was a great black marlin release just before 8 am on the first day. This after some great runs and jumps by the boat and on the leader.

On his first trip to Mozambique and the Bazaruto Archipelago, Daniel Gowder from the US hooked and released his first Black Marlin within the first hour and a half of fishing!

But this was only one of many first´s for Daniel during the five fishing days this last week. He caught a total of 6 different types of which a GT or Giant Trevally of 108cm was certainly the highlight.

Another highlight was a nice prodigal son which was also a first, this one caught on a flying jig (check the left top corner) as it came out of the fish’s mouth when it shook its head – luckily with no unfortunate consequences!!!

The last day was beautiful, flat calm, inky blue water and full of bait – with such a great start it was the perfect way to end it…or almost!

It started with a bad ass jigging and popping session which was great fun and the cuda where wild sky rocketing straight out the water on the poppers, we caught a bunch of those, some kingies and job fish and pulled the hook´s on a nice Geet.

Harry with a nice cuda caught on jig, we caught a bunch but obviously got cut off on many more.

The skipjack tuna which had been absent the previous four day´s where gale force on the last day and sitting on the bow using a light spinning stick and a 2-ounce GT ice cream we lost count on how many he hooked and landed during the day – endless fun!

On the Marlin side we ended up raising 4, for three bites and unfortunately one hookup and released early into the first fishing day.

It could have ended in the same way – this time it was Harry´s turn in the chair and we were into the last hour of the charter tacking our way south in some very sporty conditions.

The predicted SE was already on to us and all boats had faded, we were still tracking south and I had decided to do so until we got to the top end of II mile.

As I turned into a shallow tack just south of Giant´s the boys screamed Marlin – short corner!

I was facing aft as the swell was too big to do anything else and when I looked back, I could see the line was out the clip but not loading so obviously though the fish was gone! As Lourenco screamed the fish was still there it came out the water, jumping over the other short and then as I gunned the boat the fish started jumping towards us and the hook fell out….

Harry was still unlucky to miss a nice GT on a short popping session on the way home!!!

Great week, awesome chaps and good fun…and yet another species for Daniel 😉
