How big was Jake’s monster marlin?
How big was Jake’s monster marlin?: Over the years we have had some remarkable openings to a new charter.
Just last week when we had Daniel and Harry for 5 days, we caught our first Marlin within the first hour of fishing!
But what happened on the 14th of September on father and son Trevor and Jake from the UK first day was just on a complete other level!
Insane!
So, the guys want to mix it up between jigging, popping, light tackle etc for the week and on that first day we decided to run north and start the day with some light tackle fishing – so I told the boys to put out some feathers and rappies but to put the two Marlin lures on the longs on the heavy tackle.
Just in case!
This is Marlin season after all and honestly, ideally, we don’t really want to be messing around doing anything else!!!
Well, 10 minutes had not elapsed when a bomb went off on the right long Xpress in 22 meters of water!
BOOOOOOOMM!!!
Yes, that’s right – 22 freaking meters of water, that´s 79ft!
You would have to be there to believe it.
Yes, we do get this big Black female’s real shallow here but this is another level.
Another level again!
Monster Marlin
What come out if the water after the bite had everyone’s eyes bulging out, so much so that Trevor who is a very fit 71 years old and who I had spent a considerable amount of time on the way out coaxing the ins and outs of the chair completely chicken out and told his son Jake to get in the chair.
Now Jake is properly built and you can see a lot of gym in there…. Was he the right man for the job?
Luckily, they are about the same size as it was set for Trevor.
And well, he certainly was!
Despite being his first ever time in the chair he did an absolutely tremendous job from the start and never stopped picking line at the same pace which we ran towards the fish which was fast, in what was a considerable short but very intense fight!
By this time, we were into the backing so we turned and chased and Jake picked up line steady as we drove onto the fish.
F%^&%& yeah love it!
She stayed right on top and as opposed to what most of the big fish do, instead of heading East she stayed shallow which comes with its own set of problems (if you know what I mean) but on the other hand she could not sound much which could give us an advantage and get that leader nice and early.
Then she came out of the water, this time much closer to the boat and I could see she was BIG, fully grown for sure!
These were the only decent pics we could get out of a small video on Trevor´s phone, not great quality but enough to see she was a real pig!
At this stage which was about just under 20 minutes into it she gave another burst and then swam on the surface getting her energy back.
This was our chance!
Wind as it’s the last thing you will ever do Jake, we gotta get her!
Almost on the plane put her on our starboard side and got on top of her, she changed direction slightly, we backed up and Alberto got the leader but she started jumping all over again and he had to dump it.
I had my camera but it was so crazy and intense that I barely had the frame of mind to use it and got a lot of explosions (read water bombs) but not much else. Now she was swimming on the surface again, the distance from the tail to the dorsal was enormous so I picked up the camera and had to take this one shot! Fuck me she had a lot of length but most of all she was fat – that’s all the guys said afterwards, they could not believe the girth on this thing!
Let’s go again and try and get that leader!
Not wanting to drag on the fight in such shallower water I told Alberto to hold on to it as much as he could – never mind if something breaks let’s just get the job done.
Again, we ran to her and as we passed, we turned the wheel all the way and backed up and this time Alberto got a good going and we had at least five meters of leader, she was just swimming beneath us when she decided to dive.
Flick of the tail and no way of stopping her but Alberto did good and held on until something gave in and the hook pulled.
Just under 30 minutes of insanity!
My very honest gut feeling was that she was right up there (honestly over), but not having her on the side of the boat and to the detriment of so many of my clients I once again choose to call her under what I felt she was and told Jake that he had just released a real nice one certainly well north of 800!!!
When we got back and I saw the pictures on my computer she certainly seemed to be well over.
Well only two or three days later did Jake tell and show me that his Dad got a small clip of it jumping – when I saw it I got goosebumps and the hair on my neck came up and I know what that means!
We all know pics and videos can be deceiving but from when I posted that video, I have been getting messages from guys and gals all over either congratulating me or calling me crazy for ultra under calling such a fish, one from someone who did not know what I under call it and who is very close to my heart and whose opinion should be to taken seriously no one alive has weighed so many of them…
F$^%$ – what a slob. over a grand there… well and truly.
Capt. Peter Bristow
Anyway, a real good one, and the biggest we have ever seen caught in this place so early in the season – man whatever it was, it was a slob and another adrenalin rush – how the hell do you stop that feeling of insane exhilaration when you got one that big at the end of it – I don’t know just that you go into a different reality 😉
What a way to start a charter and nice to get a nice one early into the season”!
22 f%^$^ meters of water!!! That’s unheard of, might have happened but honestly, honestly don’t think a fish that big has ever been hooked in such shallow water anywhere in the World?!!
Bring it on….
