First Marlin in the chair for 12 year old Duarte
First Marlin in the chair for 12 year old Duarte: Some days are just more special than others and having your son catch a Marlin always makes it a very exceptional one!
Although little Duarte, who is now 12, as previously caught two Marlin he had never got one on the chair before and our good friend and regular client Carl Jankowitz had promised him that on the next trip we would try and get him one.
So, he skipped a day of school and came across to join us for a beautiful weather day on the 1st of November.
Duarte had caught his first Marlin when he was 7 years old and this was fishing on a dhow at BD point on a stella 5000 on spinning tackle.
Some pretty epic stuff right there and you can see that story and video here…
Then his second Marlin was about a year and a half ago when we fished with Justin Laundrey off his 16ft boat Ahab in may 2024.
This one is also on light tackle.
Here is the story:
But he was so keen to catch one on the fighting chair and we had promised him once his feet reached the footrest properly we would do so…
Today we started with the lures out of VI Mile and it was insane the number of fish we raised in the first hour!
We had 4 up on the lures within 45 minutes, all little guys except one and later in the morning another knock down from a small one.
Somewhere really small and just knocking the lures, most times not even opening the clips.
We then live baited a large skipjack down with the current.
It was quite a large bait so we put a scad skipping off the starboard rigger just a few meters from the transom.
At the top end of II Mile we have this fish come on the live bait and it’s there for ages.
It then decided this bait was too much for him and instead went to the small skip bait a few meters from the transom.
Pretty cool to see and we hook up on this perfect size fish for Duarte.
The chair was set up for Carl but as the fish jumped he immediately said:
Get in the chair Duarte!!!!

We quickly adjusted the footrest from the maximum to the minimum as well as the harness straps and game on!
For someone who had never been in the chair he did an absolutely great job and got the fish on the leader real green and we released it in no time at all!!!
Thanks Carl, that was such a great moment…
Later on we raised another one also on the small skip and had a looker on the big live bait which was eventually sharked.
So all in all we raised 6 or 7 fish but they where ridiculous lazy and we ended 1 from 1 on a very special fish
