Duarte’s first Sailfish

Duarte’s first Sailfish: Let’s get things straight – my oldest boy has definitely got his priorities right!

It took him a while but in his defense he did release three Marlin before he got his sailfish!

But, all being said kind of a nemesis and he had bites and even hooked some sailfish before but this time he did it!

Here’s the three stories of his first three Marlin

The first exactly a decade ago at BD point, when he was 6 and caught a little Black on a light spinning rod with a stella 5000 and 20 pound braid off a dhow!

Strenue ready to go…

Earlier this month we were blessed in many ways.

First Gretha’s parents come and visit and although we do see them most years during Christmas and new year and spend some great times in George and St. Francis it has been many years since their last visit to Moz!

Second, our oldest boy had holidays from boarding school and the first time he came back home since last December.

And a big third, Warren had generously given us the Lodge to spend a few days of amazing family time.

Little Duarte had the biggest surprise of his life when we literally picked him up from the airport straight to the boat and into Linene for some packed action fishing days!

The boys fished non stop from the sandspit and literally caught thousands of fish, mostly massbankers but also loads of small trevally and a lot of other critters!

Once they found the right lures they were on…

And Duarte even caught a nice size Lula for some amazing snacks…

Among many other beauties, the short distance to the fishing grounds at Linene is just amazing. We did a morning session but the best part was the last two afternoon sessions when we got on the boat when everybody else was leaving for the long run back to Vilankulos and fished the late afternoon sunset high tide!

The first day we hooked a sailfish on a ballyhoo / pulsator lure combo straight away but the line broke as the boys had misplaced it on the roller troller!

Hate those things!!!

Next up was a quintuple Yellowfin Tuna hook up and, with only my father in law Edward and Duarte as anglers it was literally chaos. Landed three and straight after we had a quadruple hookup and landed all four.

It was tuna chaos!

Really good fun and non stop action and of course great sashimi and sushi for Chef Torres to prepare!

Gretha and Dario joined us the next afternoon and in no time we hooked up and Dario got into a Yellowfin tuna which was unfortunately taken by a massive tiger shark right next to the boat!

Next up was Duarte and right on as we again hooked into a sailfish again on the Pulsator lure with a halfbeak.

This time all went well and we got it to the boat for a quick pic and the release!

We went in shallow and were messing around with the jube jube’s on the spinning and I told Duarte lets go back to the spot as it’s getting close to high tide.

He reluctantly said agreed.

Just before sunset we got back to where we had all the action and BANG!

This time it was wahoo chaos!

I mean we, after landing one we just had to move another 100 meters and bang on AGAIN!

Love to catch these speedsters and it’s so much fun for everyone.

Dario really had some harsh luck as he hooked the biggest of the afternoon and fought it so well right up to the boat when the fish broke off on the leader right there as it sped off for another blistering run! Probably damaged and unseen on a previous fish.

Just too much going on!
