Bazarutos Ocean Safaris

Bazaruto Ocean Safaris: Fishing the waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago is so much more than just catching fish, the abundance of sea life is remarkable and a great experience not only for seasoned anglers but a unique experience for newbies and families to enjoy together.

This can be expected year round but the mild winter months between June and September, when the Ocean is normal at its placid and the light magnificent it kicks in a higher gear – or should we say a heavier gear as that is when the Humpback Whales, which can attain weights of over 40 tonnes migrates through the Archipelago waters.

During the peak these gentle giant’s are a guaranteed sight and some years, and this is no exaggeration, they will be everywhere around you.

Humpback Whales…

…are one of the most fun whale species to watch as they are well known for their breaching, tail and fin slapping, sky hoping and other distinctive surface behaviors.

Early in the season they will normally be swimming north towards the equator and later they will all be swimming south, with new born calf’s as they make they way back to their krill feeding grounds of Antarctica.

Spinner Dolphins Playing

Six variety Dolphins…

…have been recorded in the waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago, four of which are very common to see and it’s very rare not to see them on any given fishing outing.

Spinners which are frequently spotted offshore, frequently in massive super pods of hundreds of individuals. They love playing on the boat’s bow and as the name suggests, “show off” their spinning acrobatic maneuvers.

Bottle-nose are also very regular and are much bigger individuals normally seen in shallower water on the seaside of the Islands and feeding with schools of bonito, trevally’s and other species in the early morning – a great sight when we are looking for bait-fish or light tackle game fishing!

With their unique characteristics, Humpback Dolphins are regularly seen inside the bay and the channels between the Islands.

Common Dolphins are also frequently spotted and Fraser’s and Striped are more rare but also sighted, especially in deeper water.

Despite being the largest fish in the ocean, the Whale Shark is a chilled docile animal that poses no threat to humans and one can regularly snorkel with them, enjoying one of the most exhilarating experiences one can have under the water.

Not many years ago sights were common and Tofo, south of the Archipelago was actually considered the best place in the World to spot them from land. In the past few years sightings have diminished but this winter, and especially of the San Sebastian peninsula we have had regular encounters always making for a very special experience.

And, it does not hurt that they often have large prodigal sons and treally species swimming underneath them!

Orcas of the Bazaruto Archipelago

It’s a rare sighting seeing Orcas, also known as Killer Whales of the archipelago but most years, especially in the colder winter months, some lucky anglers are privileged to see them.

Pilot Whales are more frequently seen throughout the year, especially out wide when targeting Blue Marlin. They are not shy and come right close to the boat, a respectful sighting!

On one occasion we have even had them take a couple of big skip baits!

Turtles humping!!!

Turtles are an everyday sighting of the Bazaruto Archipelago including 5 species.

The Green turtle, loggerhead, hawksbill, olive ridley and the very impressive leatherback turtle.

Bazaruto Dugong

Last but not least the Bazaruto Archipelago is home to the last viable group of Dugongs on the Eastern African Coast and certainly one of the best places on earth to see them.

These lady of the seas are almost a visiting card to the Archipelago and along with the mighty Black Marlin certainly one of its most iconic animals. Sightings are not that rare of the archipelago’s seagrass meadows and we have seen them on the surface and diving / snorkeling.

Besides its enormous fishing potential, this certainly is one of Bazaruto’s biggest winter bliss…

Flat seas, fair weather, humpback whales breaching, spinner, common and bottle-nose dolphins playing, rays shoaling, whale sharks basking and turtles humping!
