Blue Marlin season in Cape Verde

Doing about 3 weeks of the Blue Marlin season in Cape Verde – most of you will know that this is arguable the best place in the World for numbers of Blue Marlin and the guys have been having a absolutely tremendous season since late March, with the top boats with over a 100 releases so far. The best boat day so far was something stupid as 16 for 23!!!!

The bite seems to have taped off a bit over the last week or so when very high winds (something very common here) moved in!

The way we fishing here pulling two lures on the longs and then two hook less lures on the short´s as bridge teasers. If we raised one on the shorts then we pitch a bait (either a big ballyhoo or a small bonito) on a circle…

Ballyhoo on circle hook

Yesterday we got going straight away when we had a double header 20 minutes after putting the lines in. We hooked one fish on the long left flat BB 1656 and then pitched a bait to the other and both Matt and Daniel were on…

Unfortunately Daniel´s fish pulled the hooks close to the boat, but Matt was on solid on the #50 stand up on the smaller fish

…and after a while we had it on the leader and let it go!

Not much later we had another come up on one of the teasers and again we pitched a bait and hooked up….Daniel was on to his second fish of the day!

It was a nice strong one giving Daniel a run for his money!

Once it got on the leader the fish put on a real show!

IMG_6812

We were not letting go and the fish just jumped all over the place…

Eventually we got it under control and let it go…first ever Marlin for Daniel ☺

It went slow for a few hours but mid afternoon we got one coming on one of the long lures but it just open the clip and faded. About 15 minutes later we have another one on the long right lure, a Makaira ´19 and this time we hook up and Michael jumps in the chair…

The fish makes a series of jumps in the distance and then goes down…

IMG_6836

…but on the #130 it is short work and we get it on the leader quickly with a few jumps before release!!!

IMG_6840

Half an hour later we get a better looking fish, somewhere between 4-500 that takes a swipe at the long right Makaira 19´lure, then takes the long left but drops it. It comes back again on the long right peels about 70 yards and comes undone.

Well, 3 releases out of 6 Blue Marlin….not a bad start!
