Mozambique Tiger Fish – Zinave

This last week we did our second trip to Zinave National Park and, once again, had a great time in a beautiful setting and this time we did release a few of those illusive Mozambique tiger fish.

Last year September we did our first mission to Zinave and despite the water level being too low to have a realistic shot at those Mozambique tiger fish we did have a great time trying all possible waterholes and some amazing game walk and drives.

You can read about that trip and about Zinave National park here;

Better water…

This time the water level was much higher and despite it still being too cold for a hot bite we still got a few nice fish, the best a real nice one for Gretha on our first session.

Besides that, we had a grand time with some amazing game drive´s including a very exciting one with elephants charging us, saw an enormous python and enjoyed some great company and meals by the campsite.

Once again thanks to Justin for being the great host he is and showing us all that magical place as to offer…and putting us into some Mozambique Tiger Fish.

Here´s a few pics of the trip…
Our first short session produced 2 bites casting spoons while we were looking for live bait. Those did not connect but having failed to get any lives we drifted down river and soon had a double strike, hooking and releasing one – our first Mozambique Tiger Fish

Chasing Mozambique Tiger Fish in the early morning mist of Zinave…what a way to start the day!

Thanks to Paul Retzlaf from Mozambique Horse Safaris in Vilankulos for these early morning pics…

Gretha got her first Mozambique Tiger Fish release and the biggest for the trip. Caught on a double spoon on the ultra-light spinning tackle we were using this fish, like all others, produced an insanely aggressive bite and some violent runs and jumps…great excitement!!!
Some serious teeth in there!!!
We were literally surrounded by hippos during the three afternoon sessions we fished and crocodiles where often seen. But it’s the unreal magical and peaceful scenery that makes the experience so rewarding. A great way to wait for one of those brutes to strike your spoon or popper!

Elephant charge

In between targeting Mozambique Tiger Fish, cooking some awesome meals, chilling by the camp fire and bush walking we had some great game drive´s. But, none as exciting as the one we got chased by a herd of elephants – just ask Jonathan Retzlaff from Vilankulos Canoe safaris 

Thanks for the pic and good laugh Jay

Despite being the ever-enthusiastic angler and never stop casting Duarte Jrn. did not have much luck on our first session and was desperate to hook into one of these brutes.
Finally, he did so and brought in his first Mozambique Tiger Fish for a release.
The smile says it all….

Now it’s back to Vilankulos to get some salt spray in our face and chase fish with less teeth and bigger noses 🙂

Cheers,

Duarte A. M. Rato
