Crocodile Couta Season at Bazaruto
Crocodile Couta Season at Bazaruto: Last year in June / July we had an amazing run of really big Crocodile Couta also commonly called King mackerel but is actually the narrow-barred mackerel (Scomberomorus Commerson).
But yeah, we all know what a cuda is and amongst many good ones we released one which was certainly well over 30 kilos and caught another that we were not able to let go that weighed 31 kg.
It had been a few years since we had seen such quality crocodile couta on the archipelago.
So yeah, guess its crocodile season – but with such good sailfish and wahoo sometimes it’s hard to concentrate on it ONLY!
Crocodile Season
And, despite we not even having fished for them much yet this year, especially with the ever-efficient live jube jube´s, amongst the sailfish, tuna, wahoo, dorado and all other light tackle game fish it’s been the big cuda that have taken the limelight the last couple weeks.
So yeah, looking forward to seeing what we come to when we do fish for the specifically…
Another pig crocodile, this one aboard the 32ft Magnum Cujo last week for @aaron_simser on an overnight trip down south with @ssand528 @erinflaxman and Ernesto on board.
Yesterday we went out on the SuperCat 38ft where we will be fishing for the next month out of Vilankulos. On board we had Garth and Pietro from Johannesburg – SA, a great couple that really appreciated being out there despite the frustrating lazy bite.
We could have been a great start seeing 5 minutes into it we missed what looked like a decent size Black Marlin which would have been an interesting tussle on the stand up #50…
That turned out to be the story of the day with lockjaw and lazy fish….
The only thing that seemed to stick was the countless bonitos we caught throughout the day but otherwise it was just plain weird on the number of on / off´s we had!!! Guess the river water does not help…
First, we had a sailfish come on one of the long´s (we did have the teaser and pitch baits ready but none came up on it) , bill it for ages but never really get a bite or get stuck.
Then we missed a cuta on a live jube jube.
Straight after we caught a nice wahoo and minutes later lost a better one right by the boat.
Not a crocodile but also from the razor gang – this is also Bazaruto´s archipelagos wahoo season and when they on – its one of the most exciting light tackle fishing there is with double, triple, quadruple strikes on really nice big fish being the norm. Dealing with multiple of these speedster’s is certainly way up there…
Then we had what I think was a couple sailfish messing with the longs.
We also had a few on / off´s on the rappies.
Then we hooked a Sailfish on a scad live bait with a cuta trace (which is not ideal) only to have it pull the hooks after a while.
It was insane!
Until we got outside 9 mile where it was thick with Jube Jube´s, scads and salad fish.
Ok time for some proper cuda fishing!
Crocodile Season!
We started live baiting the jube jube´s and it was mayhem with some really nice cuda including these three crocodiles…
Garth Bluden with some serious crocodiles caught in a mayhem of a session outside nine mile which lasted until the bait went down – quick and intense!

Some more crocodiles…
Carl Jankowitz and Alex with a crocodile from last week…
There have been a lot of crocodiles but also great general light tackle game fishing including some nice YFT such as this 21 kg out of a double from last week…
We have had a steady sailfish bite with the odd small Black in the mix which are always a great bonus on light tackle… couple days ago Christopher Bettany caught both aboard Becca…
