Just a few days ago I was telling the dive Instructor at ABAZ about the amazing bait balls one get´s to see here, around the Bazaruto Archipelago. I have seen then with sailfish but much more commonly with sharks and although they are fairly common it´s always a thrill to see, especially when there´s a variety of other game fish species munching around on the left overs!
The Ocean around the archipelago as been spectacularly alive with Yellowfin tuna and bonnies feeding with the dolphins all round, skipjack schools out deep and cuda shallow. A light tackle´s angler wet dream!!!
While on what turned out to be a short but successful plugging session for GT´s this morning we saw a frigate bird and some terns whirling around some commotion in the water just under a mile away. We up lines and went to check it out and it turned out to be a bait ball…
Over twenty sharks had tightly packed thousands of tiny oceanic anchovy and where gorging on it. Schools of Yellowfin tuna and Bonitos where aggressively feeding on the left overs around it. Underneath we could see tropical yellowtail trying to get their share.
For an hour we had incredible fun the plugging, spinning and drop-shot outfits but mostly it´s just wonderful to be able to watch such a feast… well for some ´cause I tell you what, it´s shit being a small fish in the big Ocean!
Later in the day we found another bait ball, again loaded with sharks and a variety of game fish…mind blowing stuff!
Hope enjoy some of the photos we took today and will upload a couple of videos soon…
