Bazaruto Heavy Tackle Season 2022
And so, another Bazaruto Heavy Tackle Season comes to an end.
Not that there is no big Marlin out there to be caught and the boys will still be chasing them over the next few weeks aboard VAMIZI & IBO with resort guests.
To emphasize how good the fishing can be in December both IBO
and the Kraken
both just got an 800 Black and a 700 Blue on their last day of the Season a few days ago.
The below just wraps it up for big Marlin in December;
But the peak is gone for the 2022 Bazaruto Heavy Tackle Season, and now it’s down time to spend some time with the family, some chilling and a month holiday down to SA.
2022 was definitely a weird year and not only during the Heavy Tackle Season. It’s no secret that seasons are changing everywhere and the predictability of winds, water temperature and thus species is getting more difficult but weather patterns during this last year were not short of bizarre.
El Nina year?!
27c degree water at the end of April, heavy winds in May when it’s supposedly flat calm, great Blue Marlin fishing in June and then the Heavy Tackle Season…
Big SE Blows bring in the fish…
…we have always said strong constant blows from the SE in August & September make for a good Season.
Well not only did we not have a single blow from the Southeast in the whole of September and October, but the weather was just placid and we found ourselves fishing day after day, in flat calm seas.
Thus, after good conditions and fishing at the beginning to mid-September, for most of the rest of the Heavy Tackle Season we had very average green to horrible brown water.
It was crazy that we were even catching so much fish at times when it was pea soup.
Shallow water Blues!!!
Another anomaly was the amount of shallow water Blue Marlin we had at a stage – when the water was not even that good.
I mean over 20 years we have probably caught a handful of Blue Marlin in waters less than 180 meters of depth – this season, and for a couple weeks, we were catching them one after another in water as shallow as 60 meters.
We caught some good fish and came across a few real nice ones but overall, the average size was not there and, after last year´s awesome BIG FISH season it just shows you how it can change….and surely next year we will have an awesome one!!!
Fingers crossed!
But as always, we had a great time, let go some nice fish and lost a few in the goosebump category, put a satellite tag on the first Bazaruto Black Marlin, had some great GT fishing and some awesome jigging, popping, spinning and light tackle bait sessions.
A BIG THANK YOU;
To our guests – new and regulars – everyone that made it for the 2022 Bazaruto Season aboard VAMIZI, IBO and GAME CHANGER – without you none of it would be possible and we appreciate and thank you for that.
Fishing and sharing this with you guys’ year after year is what it’s all about!
To all our sponsors and supporters especially;

And to Christiaan who after being away during the Covid years is back at IBO´s helm, doing what he does best…and finishing it off in style with an 800 fish on his last day, the 5th of December.
Really looking forward to doing it all again in 2023!!!
