Bazaruto Marlin Season – mid October report 2021

Absolutely great start to the season right from the go in late August and the bite never really slowed down until we had a bit of a lull in mid-October.

Amazingly, this when the water finally got to 25c and it looked absolutely gorgeous out there.

We finished the last early October report with a good bite on the 8th when all three boats fishing hooked up simultaneously in the afternoon and ended up releasing 5 Blacks, of which three where over 500 pounds. It was also Edward´s Gilliard first ever Marlin which he released aboard VAMIZI.

You can see that report here;

We then had a few days without fishing due to a late cancelation. It turned to be a good time to be on land seeing the weather as a tad nasty and the bite slowed down and the few boats out there reported very hard conditions.

We were back at it on the 13th for a day with Sean Staine, his Dad Malcolm and his wife Sarah. It was not nice to find green water up top. We caught some live bait but where taxed after an hour. Decided to have a look deep for Blues but even then, it did not look great.

Worked south with the lures and when we got to sailfish Bay, we hooked up on one the bait rods we had close in on a Black about #200. It would have been great fun but the small trebles on the speed pro-open after a while.

There were another 3 small fish raised but again very slow.
Bazaruto Marlin Season – As we most times do when pulling the lures, we have one or two small bait rods with the rappies and daisy chains in close to pick up bait. Fishing with Sean Staine on the 13th October we had this fish ignore all the lures meant for it and take the Williamson Speed Pro on the little bait rod. As it was bound to happen, the fish eventually open the small treble hooks.
The next three days we had Craig Henkel and Andre Vermark and his two sons.

The first two days we had some great fun mayhem light tackle gamefishing in the morning. It was wild with cuta jumping all over the place, loads of bonnies  quennies, trevally and torpedo scads all over, something we have not seen in a while.

Everyone was having a blast on game fishing and Charlie and Cindy fishing with Graham also caught them nice and good.

Cuta (King mackerel festival)!

Charlie and Cindy on to a good number of cuta and some other species such as the big eye trevally on the light tackle. Thanks to Graham for the pics…

The Marlin fishing however was difficult with very lazy fish. We had three bites on the swim baits but they would just hit them out of the rigger clip but here would be no pick up to follow up.

There were a few other fish raised but only one fish was caught down south over those two days, a 700 for Big Bob on the Skip bait.

Up north, Jam Packed and after a two-day lull found a body of fish and went 2 from 3 two days in a row.

The Jam pack boys come to Baz to enjoy the the Bazaruto Marlin Season and after two slow days their last two days where cool with 4 Marlin released (including 3 blacks and one blue) out of 6 bites. Thanks to Greg, Wayne and Gary for the pics…
Last Fishing day…

Then on the 16th we changed tacks aboard VAMIZI and decided to ditch the early morning game fishing and go up north instead. It was very slow in the morning but around 9h30 bait started to pop up.

We live baited but taxman where bad, we released one and another two fortunately cut the leader through on the bites. We decided to put the lures and work north so as to work the dead baits back down with the current.

At 11h40 we putting the dead baits out and literally 5 seconds after putting it on the rigger we get a bite and hookup and Andre released his first ever Marlin at #250.

Then it went slow as we worked baits south.

It was 14h28 and Andre was literally asking me if one could see the Marlin when it come on the skip bait. I was about to explained that you get the most insane bites on it when it just happens! We had a crash awesome, shoulders out he water bite on the skip bonito but unfortunately missed that one that looked to be around #400…

Ten minutes later we hook up again on the swim bait and this time Craig brings in a #300 for the release.

It was our day as no one else saw a fish…
Even if just for a few days It was great having Craig Henkel back during the Bazaruto Marlin Season and meeting Andre Vermark and getting his first fish. We had great light tackle game fishing but worked hard for he Marlin, but on the third day where rewarded with two from three fish to finish it off in style. See you next year gent´s…

We have not fished since then and should only be back there tomorrow for a few days in the afternoon as blowing a hard 30 knot plus at the moment.

Blowout…

But on the 17th Veleiro got a #750 on a skip bait down south at Linene and yesterday morning before the wind arrived Big Bob went 1 from 2 at Giants on fish around #300.

All together we have now done

30 days and have released 21 Marlin

but most amazingly have not yet had a single day where we did not get a bite from one – it’s bound to happen but hopefully not anytime soon…

Cheers
