Bazaruto Black Marlin Satellite Tag Update
Bazaruto Black Marlin Satellite Tag Update: Here´s a small field season update on the 2024 Bazaruto Black Marlin Satellite Tag update from MMF.
For years we have been trying to put a satellite tag program on these Bazaruto big Black marlin females and as reported here in 2019 and after a Marlin research & conservation project that involved the collection and study of genetic tissue samples taken from billfishes distributed across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans it became clearer to u show important that was.
That study conducted by Dr. Nadya Mamoozadeh of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Dr. Sam Williams of the University of Queensland proved that Black Marlin represents a single genetic population in the Indian Ocean as opposed to three distinct populations as it was previously believed.
Finally, it was also suggested what we have known for years, which is that there might be a Black Marlin spawning off the Bazaruto Islands in the western Indian Ocean, which would be the first scientifically recognized spawning ground in the Indian Ocean.
On the 4th Nov 2022 the first ever satellite tagged was deployed on the Bazaruto Archipelago, this fish was tagged by Capt Duarte Rato and angler Carl Jankowitz aboard VAMIZI

Since then, there have been a number of sat tags deployed on Black Marlin off Bazaruto including this estimate 750 lbs + fish caught by Gazza Crabbe aboard VAMIZI

An estimated 750+lbs Black Marlin caught by Gazza Crabbe aboard VAMIOZI about to be tagged with a Sattelite Tag and (below) another fish about to be tagged by Capt. Duarte Rato aboard VAMIZI, this one during the 2024 season

Below a small synopses of the satellite tags put on Black Marlin during the 2024 season of the Bazaruto Archipelago
Hopefully soon we will have an in depth map with all the fish we have tagged so far over the last three seasons and more detailed data on a number of things, for me in particular would be great to see how much time they spend at Baz after being tagged as well as the exact depths they travel in and over.
Really interesting to see that all but one of the fish headed north towards the Pebane / Quelimane area before turning southward again. And of course, Steve´s fish that went all the way to J-Bay which is absolutely insane!!!
Enjoy some pretty interesting stuff in there…
